This lesson introduces students to core civics concepts within the New York context through a structured and engaging approach. Beginning with a clear agenda and behavioral expectations, students were introduced to key vocabulary like "political process" and "civic participation" using a visual word wall. The lesson progresses with the creation of a civics anchor chart and an interactive read-aloud, emphasizing active reading strategies. Students then applied their learning through a mock election and by creating civic engagement signs, focusing on a specific issue. Finally, students reflected on the day's lesson by journaling about a significant historical event and its relevance to New York civics, reinforcing their understanding and promoting critical thinking. The lesson effectively blended direct instruction with hands-on activities to foster active participation and a deeper comprehension of fundamental civic principles. What went well was the aspects of understanding civic engagement through creating the civic engagement signs. The students classroom teacher even came over and said they had done something similar recently creating signs for a protest on a power plant they were learning about. The students also met the objectives of understanding voting and that voting is a civic engagement. All the students me the objectives when asked to complete there journal entry.

SO WHAT?

What was learned from this experience? Evidence of teacher candidate learning

I learned that many students did not know what a civic duty was and thats very important concept to understand. Especially that voting is a voluntary civic duty. Many believed it was a mandatory civic duty. Alway ask if students have prior knowledge to the topic before going into deep detail.

How will this experience influence how I plan/teach/assess in the future?

Going forward this influenced my plan of teaching for the future because I think its important to always ask if students have prior knowledge in any topic being learned. Therefor you will know if some students are aware of what is being learned or have no idea what the topic is.
